pediatrician and spokesperson for american academy of pediatrics. good to see you. >> good to see you. >> we were talking before we started this. i was saying i got my kid's physical for camp. you said that's all well and good but you might want to do something more in-depth and dig a little deeper. >> exactly. school physicals aren't just for kids that need school forms filled out, camp forms and sports physicals. there's real value in seeing your pediatrician and having them examine not only your child from head to toe but their entire world. go over how they are doing physically, socially, behaviorally. >> there's certain mandated well child and checkups. what happens in those. >> first we do check the vital signs. height and weight are important. i want to make sure every child is growing two inches a year. i'll discuss body mass index with parent and child to make sure weight to height ratio is important. i'll ask what they ate for breakfast but the mom will check in, today isn't a typical day for us.

i want to make sure they are getting fruits, vegetables, proteins, dairy products. >> a lot of kids are worrying, when they go, are they getting shots. >> that's one thing to check, vaccines are important. >> kids starting off going to kindergarten. what are we looking for? >> a big topic is kindergarten readiness. is your child ready? can they sit still, listen to directions. they get excited when i ask them to write on a table paper with crayon all over. we talk about is your child ready to start or benefit from junior kindergarten many are doing. >> blood work, tb. >> evaluate for risk factors. oftentimes we'll do a quick finger poke, led, cholesterol, a screening is important. >> at this point booster shots if you need them? >> for kindergarten most students do need various vaccines. rubella, booster, polio. >> you're a parent, you want to

opt out of these shots, does that keep your kid from going to school? >> i strongly recommend all students are vaccinated. it's very important especially when they are in close quarters in school sharing school supplies. really an annual flu vaccine is the best way to introduce where kids should be. >> moving into elementary school. is it pretty much the same as kindergarten or now you're introducing some other issues like bullying and things like that. >> exactly. as kids get older, there are other things i want to look for. wasn't to talk about bullying, internet safety. i ask are parents limiting the amount of media time their kids get, is the computer in a central location. i recommend all families have an electronic curfew, an hour or two before bedtime all media gets turned offer. >> now we're talking about personal hygiene. >> as kids get older, especially boys, they need a shower every day. washing your face is very important. you're headed into those years where pimples may pop up. >> head into middle school,

junior high, what changes. >> middle school, parents and students are surprised there are more vaccines they may need. tdap, whooping cough, also a seriousness illness of brain and spinal cord, hp v human papilloma that protects against several types of cancer. >> also looking at puberty now. >> i talk to girls at puberty. i recommend they pack something in their backpack in case they need at. >> high school, other than physical exams, this is where you talk privately, private issues with kids without mom and dad in the room. >> i will ask the parents step out, let high schoolers have time to discuss any personal issues they want to with me confidentially. i think this is really important. i find that often when we discuss things whether what's going on at home, at school. we do talk about sex, drugs and alcohol. i discuss risks with them. i find after discussing it with me, often they are more open to

going and talking to parents. >> as parents if you have a high schooler and have that talk with them, at what point do you as the pediatrician say i know i've got this issue and this relationship with this student, but i have to say something to their parent. >> so everything the student tells me is confidential unless i truly feel they are a threat to themselves or somebody else, then i do let them know i need to get help. >> great advice. doctor, thank you so much. >> thank you, al. still ahead, cooking up the best of the season. first these messages.
